On Saturday, November 17, we hosted our 3rd Annual Kindle Give Away Event. This event celebrates the accomplishments of our campers who completed our 3rd grade Book Club program over the summer and helps ensure they have the resources they need to continue their love of reading.
Our Book Club helps youth begin to explore nature and the outdoors through literature and reading and addresses summer learning loss. During our boys sessions, campers read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, a book about a young boy who must learn to survive in the woods. This year, we introduced a new book during our girls session, Zahrah the Windseeker, a young adult fantasy novel by Nigerian American writer Nnedi Okorafor, which incorporates myths, folklore, and the culture of West Africa. In tandem with reading, campers participate on hands on activities that reflect the experiences of the characters in the book like building fires, catching their own food, building shelters, and more.
Thanks to our donors, we were able to provide all of the Book Club participants with Kindles so they can continue their work from the summer and grow their love of reading. At the event, volunteers helped register kids for library cards, set up their Kindles, and complete fun holiday crafts while parents registered for camp for 2019.
Thank you to all donors who support of Summer Reading Program and all of the volunteers who helped make the event a success!
