We are a little over a month away from the 21st Annual Blue Jean Ball, taking place at 9 Mile Garden on Saturday, April 30th! Being our first in-person event since 2019, our staff and event committee have been hard at work planning for a fun-filled evening for Sherwood Forest supporters. This year’s committee co-chairs, Marianne Baer and Catina Williams, play a huge role in designing our Blue Jean Ball. We took a moment to chat with them about their connection to camp and what they are most excited about this year.
Marianne:
How long have you been involved with Sherwood Forest and what about its mission drew you in?
My father, Jerry Baer, was on the (Sherwood Forest) board for many years. He introduced Sherwood and their mission to me in the mid-80’s. Since my family was involved in overnight camp my whole life, (Camp Birch Trail for Girls in Northern WI), I knew firsthand the benefits kids and counselors get from attending! I wanted to be sure that ALL kids have a chance to go to camp and Sherwood perfectly fits the bill! I became involved in the Blue Jean Ball right away, the first one I remember going to was at the Dog Museum.
How would you describe Sherwood’s community of supporters?
Our community of supporters are smart, empathetic people who want to help provide more for others in order to experience their best selves. We know that SF influences the campers and counselors and how these experiences change their relationships with friends, families and how well they do at school. It is a WHOLE person experience, not just a summer fun time.
What are you most excited about as we get back to an in-person Blue Jean Ball?
Literally SEEING everyone in person. It’ll be fun to chat without waiting for the satellite bounce lag! I’m also looking forward to Rene Knott’s excellent MC-ing, hearing a live band, sitting around our fires outdoors and, of course the food and food trucks this year! I love that SF Blue Jean Ball keeps fresh by changing our venue and style each year so we can raise funds for our campers to go to camp!!

Catina:
How long have you been involved with Sherwood Forest and what about its mission drew you in?
I’ve been peripherally involved with Sherwood Forest for about seven years as a donor. Two years ago, I joined the Blue Jean Ball committee and became a board member this year. I was drawn to this organization by its mission and by the enthusiasm of the campers and the staff. Everyone involved in Sherwood Forest loves the camp, loves the activities sponsored by the camp, and believes that they are making a difference in the community. I was enthusiastic to join this organization.
How would you describe Sherwood’s community of supporters?
I have rarely had the opportunity to work with a group of supporters who are united in their vision and goals. This group is outstanding in their commitment and enthusiasm.
What are you most excited about as we get back to an in-person Blue Jean Ball?
The Blue Jean Ball has always been my favorite event of the year! I look forward to the fun and excitement of the evening.
